Objectives:
To provide partial support for meetings held in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, to celebrate the new appointment of a lecturer at a UK university.

Please note that only one grant, per Scheme, per person, per °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êfinancial year (1 August - 31 July) is allowed.

Eligibility:

• Grant applicants should be a mathematician based in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands at the time of application and when the eventÌýis planned. Please note that should a grant holder leave the UK before the planned eventÌýthen the grant will be withdrawn.Ìý
• Non °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êmembers will need to ask an °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êmember to support the application.
• The meeting must be held in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands. Where appropriate, joint meetings involving more than one new appointment mayÌýbe supported - please note the Early Careers Research Committee expects ±ð²¹³¦³óÌýnew appointment to submit an individual application form.

Criteria:

• The inaugural meeting must take place within two years of the start date of the new appointment (timeÌýspent on parental leave will be taken into account and will not count against the two year maximum). If theÌýperiod of March 2020-September 2021 falls within the first two years of your appointment, this 12 month period will not count towards the two year period in whichÌýyou must host your event.
• The meeting should consist of at least three talks, one of which must be given by the applicant.
• There should be a social event in the department. The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êwould normally expect departments to contribute to social events.
• The purposes of the meeting would be:
  • To celebrate the new appointment
  • To strengthen the research network in which the new lecturer naturally sits, and
  • To provide an opportunity for research students and other mathematicians to spend a day focusing on the research area.
• The Society expects that the meetings which it supports will be open to all, and will only support a closed meeting if an exceptional case is made.
• Applicants must comply with the Society's policy on Women in MathematicsÌý- please note that the Society considers a lack of invited women speakers to be a very real problem, and a failure to include women speakers are grounds for refusal for funding.
• Additionally, please note the following advice on diversity at conferences/workshops/seminars

NB The Society is reluctant to award grants to meetings which clash with other significant mathematical meetings in the UK such as the British Mathematical Colloquium or the British Applied Mathematics Colloquium.

Value of award:
The maximum award is normally between £400-£500 towards actual expenses for:

• Visiting lecturers (travel, accommodation and subsistence)
• Visiting research students (travel, accommodation and subsistence)
• A social event
• In addition, the Society allows the use of the grant to cover Caring Costs for those attendees who have dependents.

The life of an °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²ÊGrant is two financial years (1 August - 31 July).ÌýAll awarded grants need to be claimed no later than the 31 July in the second year of the grant, i.e., if a grant is awarded in the 2023/24 financial year, the grant will need to be claimed by the 31 July 2026. Any grants that have not been claimed within the two-year period will be withdrawn.

Deadlines and decision timetable:
Applications should be submitted well in advance of the date of the conference.

• Please note that applications will not be considered between mid-April and mid-November.

• Grants will not be made retrospectively.

The °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Êwishes to enable carers and parents to take part in the activities that it supports. Applicants for grants across Schemes 1-9, for Early Career Research activities or who will run Society Meetings can request funding to help mathematicians with caring or parenting responsibilities to participate in their activities. In addition, individuals requiring support for caring to attend conferences, workshops, research schools and meetings or to make research visits - not necessarily organised by °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê- can apply for aÌýCaring Supplementary GrantÌýto contribute to such costs.  Ìý
